Clerq Visualize: Setting up a Dashboard
Clerq Visualize lets you build dashboards from a patent data set. A dashboard can include a Landscape and a range of charts to help you understand a technology area.
Visualize is available to users on the Clerq Intelligence tier. If you don't see the Visualize tab, your account may not include Intelligence. Contact your Customer Success Manager to ask about access.
We've included a video overview of Visualize along with written instructions below
Building a New Dashboard
Step 1: Open the dashboard builder
In the main page click Build Dashboard. A window opens where you set up your dashboard.

Step 2: Name your dashboard
Though not necessary, it makes it easier to find the Dashboard at a later date. Otherwise the title would be “New Dashboard YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS”

Step 3: Select a dashboard type
You must pick a dashboard type before you can create the dashboard. By default, it will be
“State of the Art”. We provide three ready-made dashboards which means users do not have to chart from scratch each time.
- State of the Art: best for an overview of a technology area
- Compare Competitors: best for side-by-side comparison of companies
- Portfolio X-Ray: best for an analysis of a singular entity’s patent portfolio
- Custom: Best for advanced users if the ready-made dashboards do not fit your needs.

Step 4: Choose your data set
Instead of uploading a CSV, you can build the dashboard from the results of a query (AI or Keyword). There are a few ways to do this:
- Link an existing search: choose a search you've already run in Clerq.
- Build a query in the dashboard window: set up an AI or Keyword query directly in the dashboard.
- Build a query based on filters: most useful for Portfolio X-Ray and Compare Competitors, when you want to include everything owned by a specific assignee.
Creating a dashboard from a search you're already running
To turn a search you're already running in Clerq into a dashboard, click the graph symbol in the top left corner. This opens the dashboard creation window, where you can choose the dashboard type. All filters applied to your search are automatically applied to the dashboard.

Note: Data set limits
AI and Keyword queries cap at 10,000 results, which is the system limit. CSV uploads and filter-based queries can go beyond 10,000 results. Whatever the data set size, the Landscape only displays the first 10,000 results.
Step 5: Optional filters
The filters applied to your data set depend on how you created it:
- CSV upload: no filters are applied automatically.
- Linked search: all filters from the original search are applied automatically.
- Query built in the Visualize module (AI, Keyword or Filter): the defaults below apply.
Date
Queries built directly in Visualize have a date filter that defaults to a priority date 30 years before the day you create the dashboard. For example, a dashboard created on October 2, 2026 starts from a priority date of October 2, 1996. You can change this range or choose a different date type, such as publication date.

Jurisdictions
By default, all jurisdictions are included. To focus your analysis, select only the patent offices you need.
Companies & People
This is often used to look at a company's entire portfolio with Portfolio X-Ray. By default, results roll up to the ultimate parent. Spelling variations and subsidiaries appear as one entity in the visualization. For example, for Toyota you'd most likely choose Toyota Motor Corp.

If you don't want the data set to roll up to the ultimate parent, turn off Roll up to the ultimate parent. Companies are still listed under their corporate tree, but each one appears as a separate entity in the visualization. For example, Toyota Motor Corp would appear separately from Toyota Motor Hokkaido Inc.

Additional Filters
You can narrow the data set further with:
- Publication date
- Filing date
- CPC
- IPC
- Legal status
- Cites
- Cited by
Step 6: Create the dashboard
Click Create. Clerq starts generating your dashboard.
Note: It's normal for a dashboard to take a few minutes to load. Once it's ready, it appears in your Visualize tab.
Reading Your Dashboard
Every ready-made dashboard (State of the Art, Compare Competitors and Portfolio X-Ray) includes a Landscape view. The landscape is a map that uses AI to group patents into topics. It shows the main themes in your data set and how individual patents relate to each other. Each dashboard type also has its own charts for its use case, covered in the use-case articles.
